Never place “Menu” and “Search” at the bottom of the mobile interface:
The problem:
When people write post claiming that the “Menu” and “Search” (and any feature for that matter, such as filters, etc.) should be placed at the bottom of the page, please do not follow their “advice”!
I have carried out more than 300 user test world wide and I have very strong empirical data that clearly illustrates, that mobile E-commerce customers simply overlook these business critical features at the bottom of the page.
Why?
Because customers are looking for these features at the top of the page and not at the bottom of the page.
Those who recommend placing “Menu” and “Search” at the bottom of the page claim that this is a good idea, because the features then are close to the fingers, which is easy for navigation.
This is a good theory; however, customers do not look with their fingers, which makes it wrong.
If someone post a claim stating that you should place “Menu” and “Search” at the bottom of the page, then ask them one question:
“Did you user test this with real people?”.
If their answer is no, then they are making up theories.
The solution:
Place “Menu” and “Search” at the top of the page, as illustrated in my example.
